So stoked about this one

So stoked about this one.
Two years ago, a friend and I backpacked through Japan and neither of us spoke a word of Japanese, and therefore most of our communication relied on pointing, apologizing and thanking the people who would guide us along the way.
We found ourselves in Kyoto, Japan midway through the week long trip with absolutely nothing to do and faced with a rainy day.. We asked the locals for recommendations and they pointed us to Fushimi Inari-Taisha and so we both bought raincoats to make the trip. ***Important side note, “water resistant” and “water proof” are absolutely different things-a lesson I’d learn the hard way as we rented two bicycles and made our ascent up the mountain. Needless to say, I was soaked.
We slowly climbed the Torii lined stairs (orange pillars), passing tourists, fox statues (kitsune) and massive Jorō spiders and it was only when we reached the top that we realized... neither of us knew who the temple was dedicated for and what all the statues along the way meant. (Rookie mistake)
As we discuss that fact in English among ourselves, a Japanese woman at the summit laughed and explained to us in English what each symbol meant.
I’ll save you the research: “Inari is the god of rice, but merchants and manufacturers have traditionally worshiped Inari as the patron of business. Each of the torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha has been donated by a Japanese business.” Businessmen and women had climbed the mountain to leave small toriis as prayers that their businesses would succeed. Once they’d reach a point where they could afford to do so, they’d donate a large torii.
The small fox statues along the was are Inari’s messengers and they carry the keys to the granaries inside their mouths.
(And she said the giant spiders weren’t poisonous because she saw how sketched out I was. ?
I left a small torii as a prayer as commemoration of our day and prayed that both my professional and personal lives would see the growth I wanted. Since that day, there’s been so many positive impacts in my life and I’ve received so many great opportunities.
Regardless of what you choose to believe in, I can’t help but imagine that someone upstairs (whoever that may be) is listening.
I’m both infinitely appreciative and humbled. I absolutely won’t take the open doors for granted.
